I'm waiting on the machine shop to call back, but it appears they sold us the wrong timing set and the tone wheel is different.

sure enough they sold us the wrong kit...dang-it...so next question will I have to remove the timing cover to change the tone wheel or can it be done by just securing the chain & changing the wheel?

Anyone try using something besides that wedge? The Dodge dealers in Az won't sell tools to us and SPX Miller has it on backorder. Anyone in the Az area have one they want to sell?

I zip tied the chain to the sprocket and when I broke the bolt loose, i zip tied the chain so that it touched right after the sprocket and kept it pulled uo taught so that it couldn't jump off the idler sprocket. It worked good for me.

did you have to take off the timing cover to do this and were you able to get the chain off without relieving the tension on the chain from the tensioners?
I only need to change the gear with the toner wheel.

The wedge tool pins the chain to the guide...so you gotta reset timing to change the chains and such.  I dont think you can avoid pulling the front cover to be honest.  The wedge tool is only for changing cams, so you dont extend the tensioner and it also prevents the timing chain from dropping off of the bottom sprocket and losing its position.

Hate to say so, but I dont think theres any other way.

thanks everyone for the input...we got it changed & it runs perfect. BTW we were able to wedge the chain tensioner with a wood block and didn't have to remove the timing cover.

feels good to hear it run again!!! I am a little miffed that the machine shop gave us the wrong part thou and caused all this frustration. Other than that the whole rebuild job went easily.
Now I'll have to convince my son-in-law(who owns the truck) to get one of Hemifevers SCT tuners. I love mine, thanks again Hemifever.

Pretty sure you have the same problem I had when I built my 02 4.7. You got the wrong cam gear in it. The 02 and earlier 4.7s have a different number of teeth than the newer generations, I can't remember off the top of my head how many there's supposed to be . I would look at your old Cam gear and check that. It was a major pita that had me and about 10 other people scratchin our heads for 3 months. Hope that helps
