ever get anywhere with this? Straight pipe should be among the rebuild parts list to replace the cat.

Not really.  I started tearing down the engine but realized it was going to take longer than anticipated and need a vehicle right now.  So I bought a 2004 RC Dakota with a 3.7 engine.  It is just a utility vehicle that I don't intend on modifying.  lol  It is better on mileage than the '90 3.9 and has more hp. 

I do plan to get back to the 4-banger but have just been too busy lately.  It already has a straight pipe though.
