I've been keeping my eye out for a 440 engine and 727 trans for mock up in the Dakota to produce motor mounts.  Don't want the motor home set up.

Schumacher stopped making them since the demand has decreased and he has to produce a bunch in advance for an uncertain return. He has referred people to HiPoTek since I could make them to order and not have to stock up with a bunch at one time.

The uncertainty is of course the small sales potential and how long oil pans may be available, so I have been somewhat reluctant.  However, if I mocked it up in my 1995 Dakota it might be fun to drive around as a parts runner.  I'd prefer the earlier high compression motor but they are harder to find unmolested with all the factory stuff on them.  I'd probably do a rebuild with a little head porting, mild cam, and call it good.

Been keeping my eye out on Craig's List several times a day.  Found a block cast in 1969 with a 1970 build date for $250 posted 3 hours ago.  I immediately call and it is sold.  WTF?  LOL

Found an ad on listlux for a 440 and trans.  The ad noted that it was posted 13 hours ago.  https://www.listlux.com/detroit-mi/auto-parts-for-sale/mopar-chrysler-440-engine-amp-trans-1971-complete-x0024-700-farmington_5134234

I called and the guy said it sold 3 years ago.  LOL

I'm willing to travel about 4 hours each way if it is a good deal that rarely comes along, and, most importantly, if I am damn sure what is clearly being offered.

Just found a Craig's list posting of a supposed 1969 engine and trans local to me.  The listing says he doesn't have any information on it.

Trying to contact him and if he responds that it is still available I'll bring my engine identidication codes with me so I know what I am looking at.

The '69 would be a plus as it should be 10:1 or 10.5:1 compression stock.  I could just rebuild the engine and port the stock heads withourt a lot of expense and just have fun with it.

I hope this one works out.

Unfortunately the date code showed the block was cast in 1974 and was built in 1975.  It was also a motor home engine.

Guessing the downside of the motorhome motor is low compression?

Basically yes. The piston is apparently way down in the bore and the compression is 8.2:1. The water pump may be in reverse rotation, may have a cast crank…and the transmission tail shaft appears to have some kind of hand brake drum at the end.  However, the block is apparently just as strong or maybe stronger, the motor mount ear thickness was increased, some reports say some of them came with forged cranks, 6-pack rods, and a windage tray.  However, I’m no export on the subject but have been trying to learn as much as possible to make a better decision on the best year to find for my purpose.  The earlier years with the higher compression…and forged crank would provide a great foundation for a low buck build if one can be found at a decent price.  If I was considering a complete rotating assembly, Eddy heads, etc.., then the RV block would be fine.

Found a supposed 440 with trans on face book several hours away from me.  He has it listed as a 76 Chrysler 440 but says it came out of a 1968 Fury.  The engine color is of the '68 vintage but that color was also used on the 383.  He doesn't seem to like answering questions so if he can't/won't provide me with the engine code I'll pass on it.  Too far to drive for a wild goose chase.
