Being perfectly honest, with the amount of work thats involved...most people start with the appropriate platform.

I have the same truck and looked into this. Your looking at thousands worth of work. The 3rd gens use different pcm's, you need a tranny, transfer case, driveshaft, electronics for switching to 4x4. The steering will need to be redone in the front and moved over 3" and change the angle of the steering components. Also, dodge used different front frame sections for 2wd and 4x4. The 2wd frame doesn't have the mouting points for a transfer case, the different tranny, etc.
I talked to a shop and they quoted me four months and at least 8,000 to do it because of all the work involved. I really recommend not doing it.
If you want something to offroad, go buy an old beatup 4x4 and wheel it till it breaks. Or lift your 2wd. With the right tires and gears and a locker in the rear and a smart driver it'll do pretty good offroad.
Anymore questions I'd be glad to help
